ABOUT SHADES OF DESTINY
Shades of Destiny is a self
empowerment mission created to give support to inner city
adolescent girls who suffer from social, cultural and spiritual
deprivation. Our purpose is to foster healthy self esteem by
countering negative self perceptions historically promoted by
the media and encourage pride, dignity and confidence all which
leads to a quality filled life.
OUR PURPOSE
- Teach
girls how to make better choices and decisions
- Explore
their creative qualities
- Encourage
lifelong bonds with their peers as well as
- Establish
meaningful relationships with adult women in the larger
community.
FORMAT
In a safe and trusting environment, girls between the ages of
9-12 and 13-18 meet for 8-12 weeks for two hours to discuss
important issues that affect their lives daily. Some of the
topics include: Mother/Daughter relationships, Body Image,
Teenage dating, Abusive Relationships, Dealing with Authority
Figures, Friendship, Cultural Diversity and more. The
circles also incorporate creative activities where girls
experience dealing with their feelings through writing, drawing,
poetry and role play.
WHO CAN BENEFIT
Social service
agencies, juvenile justice centers, after school programs, local
youth organizations, youth advocates and churches can take
advantage of this worthwhile program.

ABOUT GIRLS CIRCLE
RESEARCH
In the latest
research conducted in 2007 in 15 sites using the GC format, the
results showed the following:
- Increase
in communication with adults
- Decrease
in alcohol use
- Decrease
in self harming behaviors
